Case Study: Pop-up Globe at Ellerslie Event Centre

Pop-up Globe 'popped up' at Ellerslie in late 2016/ early 2017 for their second season. 100,000 People attended the season which ran from February - May 2017. We chatted to Ella Jullienne, Head of Sales & Marketing for the Pop-up Globe about their experience at Ellerslie and their time working with the team here.

Background on the Pop-up Globe...

Pop-up Globe is the world’s first full-scale temporary working replica of Shakespeare’s theatre, the second Globe. We believe Shakespeare’s work performed in the space for which it was written is an extraordinary, transformative experience. Our mission is to share it with as many people as possible by putting on a festival of Shakespeare’s most iconic plays.

What were you looking for in a venue for the second season of the Pop-up Globe?

We were looking for a location partner who are passionate about creating unforgettable audience experiences just as much as we are. The team at Ellerslie Event Centre have this belief and an incredible partnership has developed.

We were also looking for an organisation that would let us build a three storey temporary theatre made from scaffolding on their property - an opportunity that surprisingly not many people are willing to take on!

Ellerslie Event Centre’s ability to provide excellent access to amenities such as parking, close proximity to public transport, food and beverage and a beautiful garden setting were a huge drawcard in finding the perfect venue for Pop-up Globe’s second season.

Was there anything Ellerslie offered that was a bonus?

Where do we start. Not only were Ellerslie Event Centre accommodating enough to let us build a pop-up theatre on their front lawn, their entire team worked to deliver the best result possible no matter how big or small the request.

From rehearsal rooms, to 16,000 scaffold pieces landing on their front lawn, to open air rehearsals, sword fights in the gardens, permission to let off fireworks every night for four months, a 200 tonne crane in their carpark directing traffic and 900 people trampling their lawn three times a day, the entire team at Ellerslie Event Centre worked above and beyond to make an unforgettable Pop-up Globe season happen.

Would you recommend Ellerslie Event Centre to others?

We would unreservedly recommend Ellerslie Event Centre to others. The support we’ve had from Craig, Kim and the team has been crucial to Pop-up Globe’s success and allowed us to produce our best work yet.
