Our top tips for planning your Christmas party

Isn’t it amazing how quickly Christmas rolls around each year?

It’s meant to be a fun-filled time culminating in the staff party but let’s face it, organising the event can be seen as an unwelcome ‘hospital pass.’

We've been hosting fantastic corporate Christmas parties for 20 years and have put together some tips to help make the occasion stress free, and above all, successful.

Save the date early even if you don’t have all of the minor details nailed, and get it into everyone’s diaries.

Is your time worth money? Decide early if you want to do the event management yourself. Choosing a venue that will offer this as part of the venue cost has real value – they will have existing relationships with suppliers who they know will do what they promise to do, so if you supply a good, detailed brief of what you want then this is a much more efficient use of your time as a manager or business owner and you are likely to get a much better outcome.

Venue - Make sure the location for your celebration is suitable for your guests – so many Kiwi businesses now reflect incredible diversity so you need to ensure that the theme, menu and format is going to be suitable for all. If half of them don’t drink alcohol then perhaps a dine and dance with a free bar tab is not really want you want.

Menu - Choosing a venue with inhouse catering creates a seamless experience as they are using ‘their’ kitchen which reduces any risk of things going wrong (as well as your time to organise).

Theming – A great theme can make or break an event. Once again choosing a venue that works with regular theming companies will save time and money.

Entertainment – Unless you are using an event manager, don’t ever use entertainment that you have never seen perform, this can be a sure-fire way to make you the most unpopular person in your office if they are a dud or simply inappropriate for your team.

Little details count – Depending on your budget, consider including extras that will be appreciated by your staff, such as goodie bags and complimentary taxi rides home.

Personalise the experience – Take the time to research the names of the partners of your key team members – this will mean a great deal to them.
