You're engaged! Now what? The first 5 things you should do
Congrats on your engagement! This is such an exciting time for you and your partner, but it can also be one of the most daunting...planning a wedding is probably the biggest and most complex event either of you have ever (or will ever!) put together and to make it more stressful - it is attended by all of your nearest and dearest.
Don’t panic! The team here at the Ellerslie Event Centre have put together the first 5 things you should do after getting engaged.
1. Enjoy everything that comes with being newly engaged
From telling your parents and friends, to gazing at that ring all day everyday – there are some moments you’ll only get to do once – and we say, make the most of it!
It’s an announcement you’ll want to do in person (where possible) so you get to revel in all those hugs and well-wishes.
But most importantly, enjoy this special time with your significant other. Talk about what you’d like from a wedding day, share your thoughts for your future and take lots of pictures.
2. Set the date
One of the biggest decisions you’ll make is when you want to get married. Have you always dreamed of a winter wedding or is a day in the sun more your vibe? Once you’ve made that call, consult your diary (and the diaries of those closest to you) and lock something in. You’ll be surprised at what little progress you’ll make in the planning stakes until you’ve set the date.
3. What about the tone of your big day?
Once you’ve got a date in the diary – it’s time to decide if you're having a formal wedding or going for a more casual vibe – this will dictate which venues jump out at you, style of catering and theming as well as the all-important dress decision. The style of wedding may also be dictated by our next ‘point’ – budget…
4. Set the budget
There are heaps of wedding budget templates you can take advantage of and some venues offer packages which lay out a lot of those ‘up front’ costs right from the get go. Check out your finances and figure out how much you already have in savings and how much you can save each month. And it’s also best to factor in things like a honeymoon (or other life milestones – a house deposit maybe?!) at this stage too.
Top tip: Open a new credit card just for the wedding. All wedding related expenses can go on here and you can pick one that earns you an incentive you’re excited by - airline miles or points are common perks.
5. Find a venue
Many venues are booked a year in advance, so the further in advance you start looking, the more likely you are to get the time, date, and cost that you've planned for. The Ellerslie Event Centre has a range of locations, styles and packages you can pick from so it’s well worth checking out what we’ve got to offer.
